Parents as First Teachers - PAFT
Sadly the New Zealand PAFT programme has been closed by MSD . After the 30th September 2016 ,we have to say a sad farewell to our four PAFT educators.
Since 1996 the PAFT programme has worked with over 1900 families and has made approximately 39,000 Home Visits to those families. We have worked with families from 37 ethnicities which has also been enriching for us as we have learnt about the cultures of those families as well as encouraging those who speak more than one language to always talk to their children in whatever languages they use within their own and their extended families. Children who hear other languages all the time will be fluent in them at three years of age.
We have encouraged parents to walk away from a troubled past and to make new beginnings. We have supported mothers who are showing signs of Post Natal Depression to get help and we are always able to find something positive which the parents are doing and to comment on those strengths.
The Central Plateau REAP PAFT educators remained a united team with 59 years combined service. This was despite having two off site offices based in Taumaruni and Otorohanga which allowed the programme to reach very rural communities.
On behalf of Central Plateau REAP , all the Parents , whanau and especially the Tamariki, we wish to say a huge thank you to all the PAFT educators.
"You made a difference"
